I am Axelle Playoust-Braure, a freelance science journalist and author, based in France.
In my work, I make every effort to apply the methodical principles of objectivity necessary to sound, useful journalism: scrupulous verification of facts, contextualization of information, diversity of sources, loyalty to the public interest. I choose to cover socially useful topics and refrain from simply relaying government and corporate communications.
In 2019-2020, I trained in science journalism at the École supérieure de journalisme in Lille.
I am a 2024 Climate Arena Fellow.
Prior to journalism, I completed a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and sociology at the University of Lille, and a master’s degree in sociology with a major in feminist studies at UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal). I wrote a research dissertation proposing a sociological definition of species, and defending a materialist approach to speciesism and animal farming.
I’ve been interested in the antispeciesist sphere since 2015, and in effective altruism since 2018. In 2018, I co-founded L’Amorce, an online magazine opposing speciesism, of which I was volunteer co-editor-in-chief until 2022.

I commit to donate a share of my income to organizations that can use it most effectively to improve the lives of others. In 2020, I started by donating 5% of my income. Increasing this percentage by one point each year, in 2023 I gave 8% of my income. If you’re interested in this approach, I invite you to visit Giving What We Can website.
